We are more and more divided but is unity the solution?
There is a lot of turmoil going on in the United States these days. While other places around the world still have substantial concerns about their health, the anxiety around the estimated time it will take to get a vaccine for COVID19 and the fear of how life will look like in the future are globally rising, the media in the US is providing political perspectives of a growing catastrophe.
We are trying to determine if the need to wear masks and keep sufficient distance is a matter of safety or a matter of constitutional rights.
We are in favor of opening schools in about a month because children suffer from abuse and mental illness, or they starve because their parents can’t make enough money to feed them.
Or we are against opening schools because we realize that, while children are least likely to die from the virus, their teachers might not be as lucky and schools without teachers are mainly places of unsupervised daycare.
We have mayors trying to protect their city’s inhabitants while being sued by the state governor for mandating something the inhabitants are incapable of applying when asked voluntarily.
In the rest of the world, people watched us with puzzlement for some time but quickly got exhausted and confused. Now, the only reason why they are staring is to get their daily statistical updates.
We are scoring a different kind of world records
When I grew up, news about the United States frequently included announcements and records that amazed me, like:
- Won the race to the moon
- Fastest computer ever built
- Most Olympic medals at the last games
- Best software
- Best smartphone
- Best interstate system
- Best rockets
- Fastest vehicle on the planet
Basically, record after record.
Sometimes, it felt like we were standing still while new records were coming across the pond all the time.
I used to care about these records because they were exciting, interesting, and represented a glimpse of what the future could hold.
Nowadays, the media is still reporting records from the US:
- Highest daily infections rate
- Highest total of COVID19 cases
- Highest amount of dead citizens
- Record amount of civil unrest disguised as protection of constitutional rights
- Record disregard for fellow citizens
- Record demonstration of police brutality
- Record armament of the police made to look like combat soldiers in full gear attacking the citizens they were supposed to serve and protect
Those records are registering but they are so disgusting, while it’s possible to recognize them for their numerical value, it’s definitely not possible to see them as something to aspire to.
What do we hear from the few who want solutions and a path out of the darkness? They speak about a need to unify and bring the country back together.
Starting at the Beginning by Clarifying Common Terminology
I thought to look into this aspiration in a little more detail to learn what it could mean. I started at the very beginning by simply clarifying relevant terms.
You can follow my search by adding the questions below into Google:
What is the full meaning of unity?
“Unity is being together or at one with someone or something. It’s the opposite of being divided. This is a word for togetherness or oneness.”
What is the root word of unity?
c. 1300, “state or property of being one,” from Anglo-French unite, Old French unite “uniqueness, oneness” (c. 1200), from Latin unitatem (nominative unitas) “oneness, sameness, agreement,” from unus “one” (from PIE root *oi-no- “one, unique”).
What is the concept of unity?
“Unity is defined as the state of being undivided or unbroken completeness or totality with nothing wanting. It is the smallest whole numeral representation. It has the quality of being united into one. Unity can denote a combining of all the parts, elements and individuals into an effective whole.”
What is unity of society?
*** Author’s note: I’m not sure but maybe that’s what we are after?
“The unity of society arises ‘naturally’ from the relations among men. It is through interaction that people develop sets of rules and values which they come to share with one another. These shared rules and values stabilize their relationships. The unity of society emerges from commonly held beliefs and sentiments.”
What is society in simple words?
“Society is the term to describe human beings together (collective, the sum of their social networks and social interactions). The term comes from the Latin idea of societas, or the connection between friends or allies (friend or ally being socius). … Sociology is the name for the study of society.”
How is a society formed?
“Societies are formed of our social groupings at varied levels, from small towns, through countries, to broader cultural groupings such as a Western society. Within such societies, people tend to form particular cultures, formed of the ideas, customs, and social behaviors that make one society distinct from another.”
Why do we need community?
“Having a sense of community unites us. Being a part of a community can make us feel as though we are a part of something greater than ourselves. It can give us opportunities to connect with people, to reach for our goals, and makes us feel safe and secure. It’s important for every person to have a sense of community.”
These terms are often thrown around but knowing what they actually mean can hopefully help us decide what part of it, if any, we truly want to integrate into our lives.
Personally, I found them all helpful and good to know about but what I want and currently working on is independence.
Clarifying the True Meaning of Independence
The word independence means “not dependent”, or not having to depend on anyone or anything else. It also means being strong and able to survive alone. Anything can be dependent or independent. … A country gets its independence when it is no longer part of another country. — Wikipedia
One additional search in Merriam Webster’s dictionary brought to light what I’m after:
To get to these points, I preach to find ways to generate passive income by owning assets. I own residential real estate assets but all assets that retain or gain value and pay you passive income will work.
What’s important is realizing that you can decide what you want to do, where you want to live, where you want to work, how you define work, and who you want to be in community with and share principles, values, morals, and beliefs.
As the world is opening up to us by making internet access available around the globe, we will have more and more opportunities to select our location, occupation, and application of our talents.
Do we prefer to unify a society currently divided as never before? Or would we rather leave and find a place breaking more desirable records where we’re allowed to live the life we want, surrounded by people we like and with who we want to share our wealth, wins, and love?
I made up my mind. I hope you think about it too and determine what and who you want to unify.
